How Often Should You Replace Your Tires? | Ochoa's Tire Service Long Beach

Driving on worn-out tires is one of the most dangerous things you can do behind the wheel — and it's also one of the easiest problems to fix. Whether you're commuting down the 405 or running errands around Signal Hill, knowing when to replace your tires can save you money, keep your family safe, and even improve your gas mileage.

At Ochoa's Tire Service, we've been helping Long Beach drivers choose the right tires since 1988. Here's what we tell every customer who walks through our door.

The General Rule: Every 5–6 Years or 50,000 Miles

Most tire manufacturers recommend replacing your tires every six years, regardless of tread depth. Rubber compounds break down over time due to heat, UV exposure, and the natural aging process — something Southern California drivers should pay extra attention to.

If you drive an average of 12,000–15,000 miles per year, you'll likely hit the mileage limit before the age limit. But if your car sits in a garage most of the week, don't assume those tires are still good just because they look fine.

5 Signs It's Time for New Tires

1. The Penny Test Fails Insert a penny into your tire tread with Lincoln's head facing down. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, your tread depth is below 2/32 of an inch and the tires need to be replaced immediately. This is the minimum legal tread depth in California.

2. Uneven Tread Wear If one side of your tire is more worn than the other, you likely have an alignment issue — but the tires themselves may also need replacing. Our technicians can inspect your tread pattern and recommend whether you need new tires, an alignment, or both.

3. Sidewall Cracks or Bulges Cracks in the sidewall mean the rubber is deteriorating. Bulges indicate internal structural damage. Either of these is a blowout waiting to happen, especially on hot Long Beach summer days when pavement temperatures soar.

4. Vibration While Driving Some vibration is normal, but excessive shaking — especially at highway speeds — can signal uneven tire wear, internal tire damage, or balance issues. Don't ignore it.

5. Your Tires Are Over 6 Years Old Check the DOT code on your tire sidewall. The last four digits tell you the week and year of manufacture. For example, "2219" means the tire was made in the 22nd week of 2019. If those digits put your tires past the six-year mark, it's time to shop for replacements.

Why Long Beach Drivers Wear Through Tires Faster

Living in Southern California comes with some unique tire challenges. Year-round warm temperatures accelerate rubber degradation. Stop-and-go traffic on the 710 and PCH creates extra wear. Road debris from construction zones — especially around the port area — increases the risk of punctures and sidewall damage.

That's why regular tire inspections are so important. A quick check every few months can catch problems early and save you from an unexpected blowout or expensive roadside emergency.

How to Extend the Life of Your Tires

You don't need to replace your tires more often than necessary. Here are some simple ways to get the most miles out of every set:

Keep your tires properly inflated. Under-inflated tires wear faster on the edges. Over-inflated tires wear faster in the center. Check your pressure at least once a month — and don't rely on the TPMS light alone, since it only triggers at 25% below the recommended pressure.

Rotate your tires every 5,000–7,000 miles. This evens out wear patterns between your front and rear tires. If you're getting regular oil changes, ask your technician to rotate your tires at the same time.

Get a wheel alignment annually. Hitting potholes and curbs knocks your wheels out of alignment, which causes uneven wear. A computerized alignment at Ochoa's Tire Service takes about an hour and can add thousands of miles to your tire life.

Drive smoothly. Hard braking, fast cornering, and rapid acceleration all accelerate tire wear. Easier driving habits mean longer-lasting tires and better fuel economy.
