How We Fix Curb Rash

Curb rash repair is more than slapping paint on a scrape. The right repair is a multi-step process that removes the damage, fills any voids, and matches the original finish as closely as possible.

01

Inspect & Sand

We start by sanding the damaged area to remove loose metal, jagged edges, and any flaking finish. This gives us a clean surface to work with and reveals the true depth of the damage.

02

Fill Deep Gouges

Deep gouges and missing metal are filled with a compatible filler product, then sanded flat and smooth. We feather the edges to blend seamlessly into the surrounding undamaged wheel surface.

03

Prime & Match Finish

The repaired area is primed, then finished to match the original wheel finish — silver paint, gunmetal, gloss black, machined face, or whatever the wheel's original color was. We work to match color, sheen, and texture.

04

Clear Coat & Cure

A clear coat protects the finished repair and blends the sheen level between the repaired section and the rest of the wheel. The wheel is allowed to cure fully before it goes back on your car.

05

Quality Check

We inspect the finished repair under proper lighting before returning the wheel. If it doesn't meet our standard, we redo the work — we won't return a wheel we aren't satisfied with.

06

Remount & Balance

If the tire was removed for the repair, we remount it on our Coats equipment and rebalance. TPMS sensors are reinstalled and reprogrammed as needed.

What Type of Curb Rash Can We Fix?

Most curb rash is cosmetic — scuffs and scrapes on the face and outer lip of the wheel caused by contact with a curb. The damage usually doesn't affect the structural integrity of the wheel, which means repair is straightforward.

The main factors that affect repairability and cost are the depth of the damage and the original finish type. A shallow scuff on a solid-color painted wheel is the easiest repair. A deep gouge on a multi-tone machined-face wheel with a diamond-cut finish takes more precision to match. Either way, we'll tell you exactly what's involved before we start.

If the wheel has significant curb rash on multiple areas, or if you've been wanting a different look anyway, a full powder coat refinish often makes more sense than spot repair. You get a fresh, uniform finish in any color — and you don't have to worry about the repair blending perfectly with an aged original finish.

Curb Rash Repair Questions

Pricing depends on the depth of the damage, the affected area, and the finish type. A superficial scuff on a solid painted wheel costs less than deep gouges on a machined-face wheel with a complex finish. Bring the wheel in for a free estimate — we won't give you a number without seeing the actual damage first.

Most curb rash is purely cosmetic — scuffs and scrapes that don't compromise the wheel's structural integrity — and can be repaired. The rare exception is damage so severe it's cut through to a structurally critical area, but that's not typical curb rash. We inspect every wheel before quoting to make sure the repair makes sense both cosmetically and structurally.

When done correctly, curb rash repair should be virtually invisible. We sand, fill, prime, finish, and clear coat to match the original look as closely as possible. Results depend on the finish type — a solid painted wheel is easiest to blend; a factory diamond-cut machined face is more complex. We'll be upfront about what level of match to expect for your specific wheel before starting.

Most repairs take one to three days depending on the extent of the damage, the finish type, and how many wheels need work. We'll give you a specific turnaround when you bring the wheel in. If you need the car sooner, tell us — we'll let you know if we can accommodate a tighter timeline.
