Wheel Fitment, Explained

Five numbers decide whether a wheel fits your car. Here's what each one means, how to read a tire size, and the mistakes we see most often at the counter.

The five numbers

What Actually Determines Fit

Diameter and width get all the attention. These are the specs that decide whether the wheel bolts up, clears, and stays balanced.

Bolt Pattern

5×114.3

How many lugs, and the diameter of the circle they sit on.

Written as lug count × circle diameter in millimeters. 5×114.3 means five lugs on a 114.3 mm circle. This one is absolute — a wheel with the wrong bolt pattern does not go on, and adapters are not a shortcut we recommend on a daily driver.

Offset

+35 mm

How far the mounting face sits from the wheel's centerline.

Positive offset pulls the wheel inward toward the strut. Negative offset pushes it outward toward the fender — the 'deep dish' look. Change offset too far in either direction and you get rubbing, or new load on your wheel bearings.

Backspacing

5.5 in

Distance from the mounting face to the back edge of the wheel.

The same idea as offset, measured in inches from the other side. Truck and off-road wheels are usually specified this way. Too much backspacing and the tire hits the control arm at full lock.

Center Bore

66.1 mm

The hole in the middle that centers the wheel on the hub.

If the wheel's bore is larger than your hub, it needs hub-centric rings so the lugs aren't carrying the centering job. Skipping them is a common cause of a vibration that no amount of balancing fixes.

Width & Diameter

17×8.5

Wheel diameter and width, both in inches.

Every tire size has a recommended rim width range. Mount a tire outside that range and the sidewall shape changes — which affects handling, wear, and how the tire seats on the bead.

Reading a tire size

265/70R17 115T, Decoded

Every tire sidewall carries the same six pieces of information in the same order.

  1. 265

    Section width

    Tread width in millimeters.

  2. 70

    Aspect ratio

Sidewall height as a percentage of width. Lower is shorter.

  3. R

    Construction

    Radial. Nearly every modern tire.

  4. 17

    Rim diameter

Wheel diameter in inches. Must match your wheel.

  5. 115

    Load index

How much weight the tire carries. Never go below the placard.

  6. T

    Speed rating

Maximum rated speed. Match or exceed the original.

Six Fitment Mistakes That Cost Money

Matching the size but not the load rating

Common on trucks, EVs, and vans. The size fits, the load index doesn't, and the tire is overloaded from day one. The door placard is the authority, not the tire that came off.

Changing overall diameter by too much

Going up in diameter makes the speedometer read slow and can rub at full lock. Keeping overall diameter within about 3% of stock avoids most of it.

Ignoring the rim width range

A wide tire squeezed onto a narrow wheel — or the reverse — distorts the sidewall and wears the tread unevenly no matter how well it's aligned.

Skipping hub-centric rings

Aftermarket wheels usually have a larger center bore to fit multiple vehicles. Without rings, the wheel is centered by the lugs alone and vibration follows.

Reusing the wrong lug nuts

Cone, ball, and flat seats are not interchangeable. The wrong seat won't hold torque and can damage both the wheel and the stud.

Buying before measuring

Lift height, fender liners, and existing wheels all change what clears. Five minutes with a tape measure in our lot beats a return shipment.

Fitment FAQs

The fastest way is to tell us your year, make, model, and trim — we look it up. If you want to measure it yourself on a 5-lug wheel, measure from the center of one lug hole to the outer edge of the hole two positions over. On 4-, 6-, or 8-lug wheels, measure straight across from center to center of two opposite lugs.

Start with the factory offset and move from there only for a reason. Going 10–15 mm more negative usually fills the fender without trouble on most vehicles; going much further starts rubbing the fender lip and adds load to the wheel bearing. If you're lifted or lowered, the answer changes — bring the vehicle in and we'll measure clearance at full lock rather than guess from a chart.

Often, within limits. Every tire size has a recommended rim width range, and staying inside it is what matters. Going one size wider on the same wheel is usually fine; two is usually not. We check the range against your actual wheel width before ordering.

Generally yes, if the tire sidewall gets shorter to compensate. A 20-inch wheel with a low-profile tire transmits more of the road than an 18 with more sidewall, and it's more vulnerable to pothole damage — a real consideration on Long Beach streets. It's a look-versus-ride tradeoff, and we'll tell you where a given setup lands before you buy.

Usually. Sensors can sometimes be moved from your old wheels, but they don't always survive the swap and some aftermarket wheels need a different stem. We check first and tell you before ordering. TPMS reset is free with any tire or wheel purchase from us.

Yes, and it costs nothing. Call 562-422-4449 or bring the vehicle to either Long Beach shop. We'll check bolt pattern, bore, clearance, and load rating against what you're planning to run, then quote a package that actually fits.

Bring the measurements — or bring the car.

Either Long Beach shop can confirm bolt pattern, bore, offset, and clearance in a few minutes. No charge, no obligation.
