Pull into any cruise night from Bixby Knolls to Whittier Boulevard and you'll see the same thing: the cars that look finished are the ones with the right sidewall. A whitewall is one of the few parts of a build where the correct choice costs about the same as the wrong one — you just have to know which is which before you spend the money.
We've been mounting these in Long Beach since 1988, mostly on Impalas, Cadillacs, bombs, G-bodies, and the occasional Model A that comes in on a trailer. Here's what we tell people at the counter.
A Whitewall Isn't Paint
There are three ways to get white on your sidewall, and they are not equal.
Genuine molded whitewall. The white rubber is built into the tire during production, the same way it was in 1958. It's the real thing, it doesn't peel, and it's what every manufacturer worth naming sells. It costs more because it's a separate compound and a separate mold.
Portawalls (insert rings). A rubber or vinyl ring that gets sandwiched between the wheel and the tire bead when the tire is mounted. Cheap, reversible, and they let you run a modern blackwall underneath. The downsides are real: they sit slightly proud of the sidewall so the profile isn't quite right, they trap grit and moisture against the rim, and a pinched or misseated insert can turn into a slow bead leak you'll chase for months. They have a place on a driver you're still figuring out. They don't belong on a finished car.
Whitewall paint and coatings. Skip it. It cracks, it flakes, and it comes off in the first rain. If someone is selling you a "permanent" sidewall coating, they're selling you a repaint in eight months.
Buy the molded tire. Everything downstream is easier.
Whitewall Width Is a Date Stamp
The single most common mistake we see is a correct-era car wearing the wrong-era stripe. Width tells people what decade the car thinks it's from:

If you're not chasing period-correct — plenty of people here aren't — pick the width that flatters the wheel. A wide white on a 13-inch wire crowds the spokes. A 5/8-inch stripe on a fat-fendered bomb looks undersized. The stripe should read from twenty feet, not from six inches.
Bias-Ply, Radial, or Bias-Look Radial
This is the decision that changes how the car drives, and it's worth more thought than the width.
Bias-Ply
Period-correct construction and the tall, round sidewall shoulder a real 1950s tire had. It also wanders on grooved freeway concrete, needs constant small steering corrections, flat-spots if the car sits, and has lower speed and heat capability than anything modern. Fine for a trailer queen or a Sunday cruiser that never sees the 710.
Radial
Handles, brakes, and wears like a modern tire because it is one. Better wet grip, longer life, no wander. On a car you actually drive to work or take to Vegas, this is the safer answer and it isn't close.
Bias-Look Radial
The middle path most of our classic customers land on: a modern radial carcass wearing a vintage tread pattern and vintage-style sizing like 670R15 or 560R15. Looks right in photos, drives right on the freeway. American Classic, Coker Classic, BFGoodrich Silvertown, and Kontio all build in this category.
Don't mix constructions front to rear. Bias in front and radial in back is a handling problem, not a budget solution.
The Lowrider Sizes: 5.20-13 and 5.20-14
If you're running wire wheels, this is the conversation. The 5.20-13 narrow whitewall is the anchor of the West Coast look and has been for decades — a flat 4-inch tread, roughly 23 inches tall, on a 3.5" to 4" wide 13-inch wire.
A few specifics worth knowing before you order:
- Whitewall widths in this size are typically 5/8" or 1-1/4". The 5/8" is the traditional lowrider stripe. The 14-inch version runs 5/8" or 1-3/8".
- They're 4-ply with an 8-ply rating, which sounds like a lot until you look at the actual number: about 1,100 lbs per tire at 60 psi in 13-inch, about 1,230 lbs in 14-inch. That's adequate for a G-body or an Impala with a normal setup. Add batteries, pumps, and a full trunk and you should be doing the math, not guessing.
- They want real pressure. These aren't 32-psi tires. Running them soft is how people roll a bead over a wire wheel on a hard turn.
- They are built to look correct, not to run 80 mph across the desert. Check the manufacturer's speed and load specs and respect them. A 5.20 is a cruising tire.
If you want the look with modern radial manners, the common radial equivalents are 155R13, 155/80R13, or 175/70R14. You lose a little of the correct flat-tread profile and you gain a tire that behaves itself on the 91. That's a real trade-off, not a downgrade — plenty of clean cars run radials.

Full-Size Classics and Bombs
For 15-inch cars — Impalas, Cadillacs, Fleetwoods, fat-fendered bombs — you're generally looking at either modern P-metric radial whitewalls (205/75R15, 215/75R15, 235/75R15 and similar) or vintage-sizing bias-look radials (560R15, 670R15, 710R15, 820-15).
The P-metric route is easier to source, easier to replace later, and gives you more tread pattern choices. The vintage-sizing route gives you a taller, narrower sidewall that fills a 1950s fender the way the factory intended. On a bomb, that shape matters more than most people expect.
For Cadillac and big-body builds, the gold-stripe look is its own tradition out here and has been since long before it was a trend anywhere else. Different lane than a wide white, and both are correct depending on the car.
The SoCal Part: Your Tires Will Die of Age, Not Mileage
This is the section most whitewall articles skip, and it's the one that costs people money in Southern California.
A classic that gets driven to a show twice a month puts on maybe 1,500 miles a year. At that rate you will never wear out a set of whitewalls. What kills them instead is time, heat, UV, and ozone — and we have all four in surplus. We wrote about this generally in how long tires last in Southern California, but classics have it worse because the car sits.
What that means practically:
- Read the DOT date code. Four digits at the end of the code: week and year of manufacture. A "2419" tire was built in the 24th week of 2019. Specialty whitewalls sit in warehouses — check the date before you accept delivery, not after.
- Six years is the inspection mark, ten is the replacement mark. Regardless of tread depth. A 5.20 with 11/32 of tread and a 2014 date code is a decorative object, not a tire.
- Look for the cracking before it's obvious. Fine checking in the sidewall grooves and around the whitewall edge shows up first. Bend a sidewall section by hand in good light.
- Sun exposure is the variable you control. A car parked outside on a Long Beach street ages tires roughly twice as fast as the same car in a garage. Wheel-well covers or a full car cover are cheap next to a $1,400 set of whitewalls.
- Sitting on flat spots is real on bias-ply. If the car is stored, get it up to full pressure or on jack stands.
Keeping Them White
Whitewalls brown from the inside out. The black rubber next to the white contains antiozonant waxes that protect the tire, and they migrate to the surface over time. That's not dirt — that's the tire working. It's also why a whitewall you never touch turns tan within a year.
What actually works:
- New tires come with a protective coating, often bluish. Wash it off when you get home. It's not meant to stay on.
- Non-acid cleaner and a soft brush, worked wet, on a regular schedule. Frequent and gentle beats occasional and aggressive. Our own non-acid wheel cleaner works fine on whitewalls and won't attack chrome or gold plating on the wheel next to it.
- Keep tire dressing off the white. Silicone and petroleum-based shine products accelerate browning and pull discoloration to the surface. Dress the black, mask the white, or use a water-based dressing applied carefully.
- Go easy with abrasives. The scouring-pad-and-cleanser method your uncle swears by was developed on thick 1960s whitewalls. Modern whitewall layers are thinner. You can sand through one, and there is no fixing it.
- Never let acid wheel cleaner touch a whitewall. It will yellow it permanently, usually in a streak pattern you'll see forever.
Mounting Matters More Than You'd Think
This is where a lot of expensive tires get ruined, and it's the reason we wrote this instead of just sending people a catalog link.
A whitewall gets mounted white-side-out, which means the white rubber is the surface touching the machine. Careless jaws, a dirty bead breaker, or too much force leaves black scuff marks on a brand-new sidewall on the first tire of the set. It comes off — sometimes. Sometimes it doesn't.
The rest of it:
- Wire wheels need the adapter torqued correctly and re-checked after the first hundred miles. This is the single most common thing we find wrong on cars that come in from somewhere else.
- Some wire wheels require tubes. Know which yours are before you buy tires, not during the appointment.
- Small-diameter and vintage tires still need to be balanced properly. Bias-ply won't ever balance as smoothly as a radial — that's the construction, not the shop — but a good high-speed balance is the difference between a cruise and a headache.
- Knock-offs and spinners come off before the machine touches anything. Obvious, but we've seen the alternative.
- No TPMS on most of these cars, which means you're the pressure monitor. Check it monthly with a real gauge.
How to Get a Set
We don't keep whitewalls on the rack — nobody does, and any shop that tells you they stock 5.20-13s in three whitewall widths is guessing. These are ordered to spec. Expect a few days for common lowrider and 15-inch sizes, longer for prewar and odd vintage fitments.

Are whitewall tires still made?
Yes, in genuine molded form, by several manufacturers, in both bias-ply and radial construction. Availability by size is the real constraint, not availability in general.
Can I put whitewalls on a modern car?
Physically, in some sizes, yes. Whether it looks right is a different question. Narrow-stripe radials in common modern sizes are the usual approach for custom builds on later platforms.
Wide white or narrow — which is correct for my car?
Match the era. Pre-1955 wants 2.75" or wider, late '50s wants around 2.5", mid-'60s wants roughly 1", and '70s-and-later wants a 5/8" stripe. If the car isn't a period restoration, pick what suits the wheel.
Are 5.20-13s freeway safe?
They're built for style and low-speed cruising, with modest load and speed capability. For a car that regularly runs freeway distances, a radial equivalent like 155/80R13 is the more sensible choice. We'll talk you through it either way.
